The COVID-19 pandemic brought about diverse changes across multiple areas for the Latin American population, who was already facing complex political and economic situations along with fragile healthcare systems. Healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic were mostly vulnerable to experiencing physical and psychological disturbances, as well as significant impacts on their psycho-emotional and psychosocial well-being, related to the environmental and working conditions during the study period. Women in healthcare, with their dual roles and responsibilities (social and professional), may have developed greater emotional disturbances than their male counterparts.
An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with prospective recruitment aimed at analyzing the psycho-emotional impact on female healthcare workers during the pandemic period. The population comprised healthcare personnel from San Carlos de Bariloche, with a non-probabilistic sample for convenience.
Both female and male healthcare workers experienced changes in their work
environment, having developed physiological and psychological manifestations of
stress in high proportions. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected the psycho- emotional well-being of both female and male healthcare workers in San Carlos de Bariloche due to changes in work dynamics and the experiences each gender had during the study period. The meanings that men and women attach to their experiences arise from social contexts and historically gender-associated roles, explaining the manifestations expressed during the pandemic in each case.
